I took my friend Phil Ferreira, who was a Vegas Virgin prior to this trip. Unfortunately for him he lost more than his cherry in Sin City.
Now my buddy Phil is not what you would call a gambler. He would rather be at The Gap then at the craps table. However we were able to put in some quality time at the Blackjack table. However since Phil is a novice at the Blackjack table he did commit a few errors, some of which he was reprimanded for. Thanks to Phil, I am going to share some of the DONT’S so you don’t make them same mistake.
We were playing double deck blackjack, this is a game where the dealer hands out the cards; it does not come from a shoe. The cards are dealt face down so you must pick them up to look at them. Now you can pick them up with one hand only, not two. You are not permitted to bend the cards. Never hold your cards in front of the chips, always behind them. If you would like a card, scratch the felt with the cards, if you want to stand place your cards beneath the chips. If you take a card and you bust, flip your cards over so the dealer can take them. If you want to double or split, flip over your cards and place your additional bet on the table. Now by following these rules you will avoid being reprimanded by the dealer.
Here are some of the subtle differences when playing Blackjack from a shoe. The player never touches the cards. If you want a card, scratch the felt with your fingers or make a beckoning motion with your hand. If you are staying, wave your hand across the top of the cards. If doubling or splitting, just notify the dealer place the additional bet beside the original one.
My most important piece of advice, try not to play when you are heavily under the influence of any substance. I was at a table where the guy beside me could barely sit up straight, but felt he had the wherewithal to make $100 bets. Suffice it to say he did not fare to well.
