And the winner is Genting!
The $3 billion Resorts World at Sentosa will open in early 2010.
Singapore's deputy prime minister, S. Jayakumar, said at a news conference that Genting had provided "the most compelling proposal over all that best meets our economic and tourism objectives. "We wanted a large-scale family-oriented resort that would draw a large number of new visitors to Singapore.”
The competition to land this license has been fiercely fought all year, as Genting vied against two other companies – Kerzner International and Eight Wonder – to win the coveted license. This is the second and final casino the country will allow for at least a decade and is being looked at by Singapore’s government as a major way to boost tourism both for gamblers and families. The country hopes to see 17 million visitor arrivals by 2015, twice the number that will visit this year.
Earlier this year, the first integrated resort license was issued to Las Vegas Sands Corp, developers of the Venetian Resort in Las Vegas. Their property is scheduled to debut during mid 2009.
“We are extremely delighted to have been chosen and are very excited and honored to be entrusted with the great task of taking Singapore’s tourism sector to the next level,” said Lim Kok Thay, Chairman of Genting International and Star Cruises. “We have the means and ability to shift the paradigm of tourism here and look forward to contribute to the next chapter of Singapore’s tourism success story.”
When complete, Resorts World at Sentosa, will include Universal Studios Singapore, the region’s first Universal Studios theme park, which will include DreamWorks Digital Animation Studios. Quest Marine Life Park, the world’s largest oceanarium, will provide visitors with interactive multi-sensory experiences to learn about and discover the life of marine creatures and the need for ocean conservation while Equarius Water Park will incorporate the latest water theme park technology, nestled under the natural canopy of Sentosa’s original forest.
The Maritime Xperiential Museum, the only museum in the world dedicated to the celebration of the maritime heritage of Asia, will engage visitors’ five senses to retell the history of the Asian maritime Silk Route. In addition, the museum will feature Asia’s first marine genomics research and learning centre, which will be set up by Dr J. Craig Venter, a pioneer and leading expert in the field of genomics.
The resort will offer six hotels with 1,830 rooms. It will also house the region’s first fully integrated wellness spa, to be operated by luxury spa operator ESPA.

“In three years, visitors will experience first-hand Resorts World at Sentosa, the global tourism icon that we envision it to be. It will change the face of tourism in the region. We are confident that by 2010, Resorts World at Sentosa will attract 15 million visitors,” said Lim. “The Consortium promises to deliver an integrated resort that Singaporeans will be proud of, one that will contribute significantly to the local economy and community.”
Interestingly, Singaporeans will be banned from gambling in the casinos once they open as the country is trying to limit gambling addiction. They will be fined the equivalent of $100 if they are caught.
Earlier this year, Genting purchased 80 percent of Stanley Leisure plc, for $901 million (483.6 million British pounds). Genting already owns the other 20 percent.
Stanley Leisure Plc is the largest casino operator in the UK with 45 casinos and this purchase by Genting gets the company into an emerging gaming market.
Genting International owns also owns 29.8 percent of London Clubs International (which is being sold to Harrah’s Entertainment) plc and is the owner and operator of Maxims Casino Club in London. It also has a joint venture with Stanley to bid for the regional casino under the new UK regime.
