Sebelius noted that as a House member, Krehbiel, a Democrat, served on the Federal and State Affairs Committee, which handles gambling legislation. He has demonstrated an ability to reach out to “all sides of complicated issues” and shares her views about the need for strong oversight of the new gambling projects, said the governor.
“The goal is to ensure the process proceeds smoothly and that proper oversight is maintained at every step of the way,” said the governor.

Legislation allows hotel-and-casino complexes in Ford County, Wyandotte County, either Cherokee or Crawford County, and either Sedgwick or Sumner County. It also permits slot machines at Wichita Greyhound Park, The Woodlands in Kansas City and the now-closed Camptown Greyhound Park.
Horse Racing, Casinos Expand
The new rules leaves the regulation of the new gambling to the Racing and Gaming Commission, a board created in 1987 to oversee dog and horse tracks.
The new gambling czar would report to the commission and the governor’s office, serve as a liaison to the Legislature, as well as help draft regulations for the new casinos and slot machines.
Sebelius said the new czar would “ensure the state manages and regulates all forms of gaming permitted in the state uniformly and efficiently.”
