State Lottery Director John Musgrave said that new employees being hired by his agency to regulate table gambling will not be finished with training until November, at the earliest, thus postponing the much-anticipated start of table gambling in the state.
Executives at both Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center and Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort in Chester, however, said they are proceeding with plans for table gambling, and will be ready whenever the government regulators are trained.
Mountaineer had hoped to offer poker games in August, while Wheeling Island had wanted to start poker on Labor Day weekend, with games such as roulette and blackjack offered in October.

New Dealers
Both racetracks are now hiring dealers and other employees, and expanding their facilities to accommodate the new customers.“The most important thing is that we open up properly,” said Robert Marshall, president and general manager at the Wheeling Island casino. “We have been working with the lottery commission all along, and there is a lot involved with the regulations. We want them to have the right controls in place and to be certain they are doing the right thing for the business.”
Marshall hopes the lottery commission can actually provide the needed regulators sooner, rather than later.
“They have stated November 1 as a target,” he said. “We’re hopeful we can start before November, but they have to hire a bunch of people and get them trained. We are at an advantage because we did our hiring ahead of time,” said Marshall. Marshall said the track is continuing to seek "prospective dealers" for table games.
Mountaineer spokeswoman Tamara Cronin said plans will continue at that racetrack to begin table gambling there as soon as feasible.
“The delay will impact us, but we will continue with our training school and the necessary steps to get our dealers trained. We will certainly be ready to go when they are," said Cronin.
