The government of the Caribbean nation of Guyana may enact legislation similar to that in the Bahamas, which will allow casino gambling, and Internet gambling, President Bharrat Jagdeo said.

New Internet Gambling Legalization in the Caribbean

The politician, and his party, is hoping to pass the new legislation before the Cricket World Cup (CWC) matches next year.

The legislation will allow four-star rated hotels with 250 rooms and above to be granted gambling licenses. There are already two hotels under construction that may meet the requirements, which will be completed to cater for the more than 30,000 visitors and tourists coming to Guyana for the Cricket World Cup, the World Series, so to speak, of cricket, a game similar to American baseball.

President Jagdeo said that the passing of the proposed legislation will allow visitors to Guyana, located in South America, on the Caribbean coast, near Venezuala and Brazil, to open new casinos. Currently, Guyana’s legislation does not prevent Internet gambling, which is now also poised to grow under the Jagdeo administration.

Officials in Guyana are hoping to use next year’s Cricket World Cup to propel its tourism industry to the next level and, with the growth of new casinos, tourism may become an even larger part of the developing nation's economy than before.

"If the guests are going to go to Barbados or the Bahamas because they have casinos and we could attract them in this country by having casinos at the hotels where they are staying, then we should do so," President Jagdeo said.

The religious community there, however, has historically been opposed to the concept of casinos, claiming that gambling could create social problems, and has argued that the money spent by the average person on gambling there could well have been spent on household furnishings, enhancing overall family life.

Another Growth Spot

The new moves come as the gaming industry is recovering from the unexpected rejection at the polls this week by voters in the tiny U.S. state of Rhode Island of a proposed new casino. But, industry experts tell Onlinecasinocrawler.com, that gambling there is continuing to grow.

As the New England state has been mulling a new casino, the established casino there, Lincoln Park, has been expanding. The aging greyhound track is adding more slot machines -- another 1,150 in addition to the 3,602 currently there. There will also be upscale restaurants, and a new 2,100-seat sports and entertainment arena.

BLB Investors is spending more than $200 million on expanding and renovating the race track, and the proprietors hope to double the attendance from the current 10,000 visitors a day to 20,000.

Lincoln Park hopes to complete its renovation by early spring. Track spokeswoman Cindy Stern said that table games are not part of Lincoln Park’s current expansion plans, but she would not rule out a future push for "table games."
