Before you bet on any sporting event, you need to think hard about what you are doing. As you probably know, there is a lot that can go wrong when placing a wager.

 You could make any number of mistakes that would all but kill your chances of success.

When you know what you are doing and are devoted to spending time with every step in the process, you will find it much easier to succeed.

So the question is: what do you need to think about when betting on sports? After all, “think hard” is a pretty vague term. You need to know what you are thinking about so that you expend your energy on the right details.

Here are 10 things to think about before you place a bet on any sporting event.

1. Make things easy on yourself and compare the two teams or players that are facing off. If you only look at the team names, you are not going to get very far. Remember, just because a team was good last year does not mean that this will hold true in years to come. You need to compare and contrast the styles of the teams that are playing. When you do this, you will get a good feel from the start on which team will put you in the best position to win.

2. When betting on team sports such as basketball and football, you need to look at the players that make up each one. The team with the better players always has the best chance to win. This does not mean that thing always work out this way, but it makes sense, right? Take a closer look at what type of players each team will be playing with. If you can see that one team has superior players, you will want to consider betting on that team. 

3. It may sound stupid, but in most sports the home team holds a big advantage. There are several reasons for this. First off, they are more familiar with the surroundings. From there, you must also consider that the home team did not have to travel to the game. Finally, the home team usually gets the support of the crowd. And as you know, this can be the determining factor when a close game is being played. While you should not always bet on the home team, you need to factor this into the equation. 

4. Does one team have a star player that will be better than anybody else in the game? This is a very important question to ask when betting on team sports. A star player can make all the difference in a close game. For instance, would you bet against Michael Jordan and the Bulls in the past? For most people, the answer is no. Jordan’s teams did not always win, but they had a very good chance each time they took the court thanks to his prowess and star ability.

5. When trying to choose which team to bet on, take a look at past history. Have the two teams played earlier in the season? If so, examine that match-up to get a better idea as to which one put on the better show. You may find out that the team who won the first game is not necessarily in position to do the same. Anytime that you can look back on past games, you will have a better chance of choosing the right team this time around. If available, this is an important detail to look into.

6. Are any of the better teams stuck without one of their best players due to an injury? You should most definitely look at the injury report before placing any bet. If a star player is going to be on the bench, it will hurt the team overall. This does not mean that an injury will impact a game, but it has a chance of doing so. You can find injury reports on most of the bigger sports websites. This is one detail that many sports betters pass on. Don’t make the same mistake. 

7. Is the game you are considering the best bet for the money that you are willing to put on the line? At any given time during the year, there could be several sports being played. For instance, in the winter you will have to choose between betting on football, basketball, and hockey. Moving into the spring, baseball comes into play as these three begin to phase out. To go along with different sports, more than 10 games can be played within each one on any given night. Is the game you are betting on the best option? 

8. To go along with number seven, think about how much money you are going to bet. You may think that a game is a lock, so you decide to put your entire account on the line. This is never a good idea because there is no such thing as a sure thing when it comes to sports. You never know when a team is going to choke, or a particular player is going to have the game of his life. Be very careful about how much money you bet.

9. What are the odds of the game or event that you want to place a bet on? For instance, if you are betting on golf each player will have odds for their chance of winning the tournament. The frontrunner may have 3 to 1 odds. This means that for every dollar you bet, you will win three if your golfer wins the tournament. Of course, you could bet on more of an underdog and give yourself a better chance of winning more money. You need to weigh the odds against which player you think has the best chance of winning.

10. Think hard about where you are going to place your bet. Do you want to use an online sports book? Or is there a casino in your area that takes sports bets? As long as the sports book is legal and reliable, there is nothing for you to worry about. Once you find a casino that you like to bet with, stick with them for the time being. It is much better to bet with somebody you trust. 

Before you place any sports bet, it is very important that you think long and hard about the 10 points listed above.
