Taking Wagers on Winners of Reality TV Shows
Now, gaming enthusiasts can wager against others on the likely winners of this season’s new reality TV shows. You may now place your bets on who will survive on “Survivor,” who will perform well on “Rock Star,” or who will be named “American Idol.”
Leading online casino and sports betting site, Sportsbook.com, is offering odds on reality TV, and already has this season's slate of shows covered. Other sites are expected to follow with similar offerings soon.
Huge Business
"Everyone thought reality TV was just an annoying fad when the original ‘Survivor’ launched years ago, but the shows keep getting better, audiences larger and the concepts more entertaining," said Alex Czajkowski, a spokesman for Sportsbook.com. "Reality TV is a huge business for the networks, advertisers, sponsors and for the betting industry as well. It's possible that we'll take in more bets this year on television shows than we have in all previous years combined."According to Czajkowski, Lukas Rossi is the front runner to become the front man for TV’s “Supernova.” The punk rock wanna-be is a 10-11 bet to capture the coveted role of leading a band that includes rock-and-roll icons Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted and Gilby Clarke.
What’s more, despite a tepid response from fans and a bottom three finish last week, Toby Rand remains a “strong contender” to get behind the microphone, and merits 7-5 odds, said Czajkowski. Hopeful Dilana Robichaux is, so far, the leading female, and is still in the good books with voters and is a 3-1 bet, he added.
Another show, “Dancing With The Stars,” features professional dancers who teach other artists, musicians, actors, talk show hosts and former professional athletes, to be world-class ballroom dancers. “The season three line-up features 11 dancers, more than ever before,” said Czajkowski..
According to Czajkowski, “Saved By the Bell” star Mario Lopez is the favorite to get his steps down with odds of 3-1. Hollywood starlet Vivica Fox will employ her choreography skills from the film “Kill Bill” to get in groove with partner Nick Kosovich. Ms. Fox is currently Lopez's biggest challenger at 4-1, said Czajkowski. Former talk show host Jerry Springer is also a contestant, though he is deemed a 30-1 bet to win the contest.
The show “Survivor,” is, meantime, still going strong after 11 seasons. “Sportsbook.com is offering odds of whether the sole survivor will be a man or a woman and bets for each currently sit at 5-6,” said Czajkowski. “In the past ten Survivor seasons five women and five men have won the competition.”
Next year, there may be even more interesting programs to wager over for gamers. NBC is planning to develop a reality TV show based on the successful Owen Wilson film, "The Wedding Crashers," which tells the story of two louts who crash other people's weddings, trying to pick up desperate women.
"Everyone loved 'Wedding Crashers' and we wanted to see if we could capture that same kind of inspired frivolity in a real-life series," Craig Plestis, senior VP of alternative programming, development and specials for NBC Entertainment said.
