Anti-Gravity
By: Rich Ferguson
Your poker chip defies gravity and apparently floats up from one hand
to the other as your friends stare in amazement! (Figure 1) You’ve seen it on TV and now you will be able to do it too!
[Explanation]: The ‘Anti-Gravity’ trick is actually quite straightforward. However, like any trick that looks this impressive, it will take a lot of practice to master. First, place a chip in the ‘cup’ of your face-up hand. Ever tried to ‘palm’ a coin? That’s exactly how you should grip it.
Hold the chip in place by squeezing it into position between the large fleshy pad at the base of the thumb and whichever area of the palm that the other end of the chip ends up hitting against. (Figure 2) This will vary from person to person. Make sure you don’t reach over with the entire thumb! (Figure 3) It will be awkward to hold the chip without bending the thumb over, but suck it up.
Today, you are learning how to move your thumb in a whole new way. Actually, try to point the tip of your thumb backwards away from your hand as you push the base of the thumb against the chip.
Now you should be able to turn your hand over and keep the chip from falling out. Feels awkward, huh? Get used to holding onto the chip like this without closing the hand and letting the top half of the thumb bend over the chip.
the top part of the chip, which is against the fleshy area of the base of the thumb, to pop loose. Do not let the other end of the chip slide first. The chip must be released first at the point where the chip hits the meaty area of the base of the thumb and the palm. Squeeze hard enough to get the chip to release here! Your goal at this point is to get the chip to flop over into your hand. (Figure 4)
When you can do this, you are almost there, baby! Practice this part several times over until you get the chip to ‘pop’ out of position. You are ready to go big! Aim your hand with the ‘loaded’ chip toward the other hand and practice causing the chip to ‘jump’ across to the other hand. (Figure 5)
Remember, you are not tossing the chip! Let the chip pop out of position and jump across on its own. If necessary, you can aid the jump with the slightest pushing action. Once you can move the chip side to side, go for the Anti-Gravity move with one hand directly below the other. (Figure 1) This looks absolutely slick when done smoothly.
[Tips]: Heavier chips flip better and further, so no flimsy plastic. Also, hand size doesn’t matter. Keep a chip with you to practice palming when you have a spare moment. To develop better coordination, practice palming with both hands. Finally, don’t try the trick at the table until you have it down to a science, lest you miss and hit the dealer or cocktail waitress in the eye.
[Advanced Tricks]: Once you have the knack down, you will be accurate enough to catch the chip at the fingertips of the awaiting hand every time! (Figure 5) Better yet, aim the ‘palmed’ chip toward the top chip in a stack of chips at a 45-degree downward angle and ricochet the chip across to the other hand. Now you are really shaking things up! (Figure 6).
