Some Poker Rooms

When I first walked into a poker room in 1992, at the Sands in Atlantic City , I thought I was in heaven. Finally, a game where I felt I could win. Where my fate was in my own hands by the way I played the game. Most games were great and it was like picking up a paycheck every time I went there.

When the bigger rooms like the Taj and Trop opened up, it brought more people to the rooms. Along with that came attitudes and personality conflicts. It's not like the poker rooms out west, where you get more of a relaxed vacationing tourist crowd.

These are day trippers and more importantly day trippers from New York and Philly. I stopped playing after a few years, because I couldn't take all the arguing, war stories, bad language, players abusing dealers, players abusing staff, and just sore sportsmanship in general. I was never really abused, but hated to see others take it.(could be because of my 6’, 1” 300 pd frame). Which means the staff at the casinos have to be really good at keeping problems to a minimum.

Recently, I was in Trump Taj Mahal poker room and talked with Tony Marino, who has been there since they opened the room ten years ago. I talked with him about the difference today compared to when they opened and this was one of the major things he said to me.

"We have a zero tolerance policy on abuse of any kind".  I said, what if it was a high limit game like the one that was going on at that time, 200-400. He said, "If it is 1/3 or 5000/10000, it is handled in the same manner". This is great news. because poker is just growing and growing and the last thing new comers to the game need, is to be abused.

The Taj's staff is very friendly and helpful and if they have the staff, they will even take a new comer aside and show them how the game is played. I am back  playing there now on the weekends and over the last few years, I see the difference.  We at the Casino Times News are happy and proud to have  display racks in the poker room at the Taj and the room is always tops in our eyes.
