I didn't hit him because I was afraid he would hit me back. There's nothing like being honest even with yourself and the hardest part was that he was right. I should stop when losing.

But of course we can't. I did listen to him and he softened his stance as soon as he knew he had my attention.

"I'm not telling you to stop forever," he went on, "maybe a day. Better still, cut the number of games you bet on, but more importantly go and bet $5 on a game until things turn around. See what happens."

He walked away. Oh, I saw him many times after that and we talked about Theory, Discipline, strategy, and all the things sports bettors kick around.

But I went out that night, after I lost again, and thought about his words. What was he asking me to do? He wasn't telling me to quit gambling, but to temper my play, to cut losses, to put a damper on the pain and frustration that is inevitable when you lose big wagers.

Through the years I did heed his advice and it was the start of a super conservative approach to sports betting. Jake was about 75 years old back then. I think it was 1962 or 1963 and we crossed paths many times. He was a quiet little man who lived strictly on his sports bets.

He's not around now. Probably giving advice to the Big Guy in the sky, but apply his words to your sports gambling. At least think about it, like I did.

It was great advice then and it still works today. I’m not telling you to quit, period. I'm telling you to lay out your Bankroll and bring your bets back to reality!!
