The Start

Now we slide into the first part of the Big 4. It's your Bankroll and it's listed first because without it, you can't gamble. In fact, you can't do anything without a Bankroll.

Yeah, yeah, you're going to tell me your bookie takes credit and you got a week to pay your bills. You pick up the phone on Monday night, lose $600, and won't have to worry about making good for 2 weeks. But do you sleep well at night?

Does your wife know you just blew the $600 and that her Christmas present will be delayed until the 4th of July? You set up a budget to get back the money.

How about the movies you were going to take your kids to? You can save $21 on the tickets, $11 on the popcorn and soda and on the ice cream sundaes you promised them. That's $39 you can set aside, minus the three bucks you lay out to rent the 1986 movie and the three packets of hot chocolate you con them into accepting.

Then you drop pennies into the Parkway toll plazas for 3 weeks to pick up a couple of extra dollars. Lump that into no tip for the paper boy and blowing your nose when the Church collection basket goes by and it shouldn't take you more than 37 months to make up the money you lost because you had no Bankroll to begin with.

You put yourself into more trouble with a dumb move like that than my ex friend, Leaping Louis Long street.

Leaping Louie had this habit of doing things before he was ready. He and his wife lived in a beautiful suburban home, but wanted a second home on the beach. They didn't have the money to bankroll the down payment but decided to cut corners.

They mortgaged their home, used the money as a down payment on the summer home and then canceled their insurance to save a few bucks. Within 6 months Louie lost his job, reneged on both mortgage payments, lost the summer house and is now "bargaining" with the shylocks to keep him afloat until his next core comes up.

He jumped too soon. You think this is a made up story? Believe me it isn’t and it's just like the dorks who make bets with no Bankroll to back them up. The phone is the worst enemy of the sports bettor. It's too easy to get into trouble by hitting those 7 key numbers, every time you get a "feeling."

Most guys make bets figuring they're going to win and have seven to ten days to get up the money. The lack of the money to Bankroll your bets puts you in trouble. Without that Bankroll, you're walking on eggs week after week.

To gamble, you need a Bankroll   an amount of money on which to fall back when you're in a losing streak, an amount to keep your head straight when that loss occurs.

You ask: how much is a Bankroll?

Glad you asked. Read on..
